'Always Was, Always Will Be'

'Always Was, Always Will Be' was designed with the 2020 NAIDOC Theme in mind and is my representation of this.
This painting illustrates the deep connection that First Nation people have shared with Australia for thousands of generations. It reflects the concept of ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’ and how we as First Nation people are deeply connected to the land. It shows our unique knowledge of and connection to the land, our community, culture and journey of healing.
The centre of the painting illustrates the sun and it shows that we have been here since the dawn of time. The bottom half represents our Ancestors and the thousands of generations before us who continue to provide us with strength, knowledge and guidance for today and for our future generations. The present and future is reflected in the top half where all people are coming together to acknowledge the oldest surviving culture on the planet. The spirits in the painting show our continuing link to our Ancestors and the spiritual guidance they provide. They are connecting the past, present and future. The bottom of the painting reflects water; the ocean, lakes, rivers, creeks and waterholes that provide sustenance and give life. The path above the water pays respect to the land and the many Nations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders that care for our land. This path acknowledges all of the aspects of the land and how it provides for us as well as the connection and relationship between First Nation people, the land and the plants and animals.
The top of the painting reflects the current and future generations and the paths they have forged to a stronger future where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander connection to the land is acknowledged by all. It shows that by connecting with our culture, our past and each other we can show everyone that this land Always Was and Always Will Be Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander land.
